American Design: Florida Tropics

The final blog in our American design series brings us to Florida and the land of the tropics.   Florida weather allows for so much more outdoor design because the season is SO much longer than in New England.  I like to try to make the transition from indoors to outdoors a visually smooth one with the use of similar types of furniture, colors and textures both inside and out!

 

 

I love the leather wrapped rattan on this Tommy Bahama table and chairs.  Whether in a dining room or on a lanai it’s such a welcoming spot for dining.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Capiz shells make for a BEAUTIFUL chandelier. I love the light, airy feeling, and the reflection when the light hits just makes them shimmer!  I LOVE this one from Kouboo.- at 41″ long, it can be used over a table in your dining room with high ceilings, or in a entry or stairwell.  The reflection of the shells will also help to increase light to a dark space.

Whimsical, colorful accents are right at home in a tropical setting.  This blue Glass Fish Bowl is a unique twist on tabletop accessory!

 

I saw these handmade plates and bowls and was so taken with their pop of color and varied shapes and sizes.  The lace design is so nicely displayed on the plates, they are almost too pretty to put anything on them!

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Alexa Hampton brings such a sophisticated touch to everything she creates.  I love the shape and size of these chairs, compact yet comfy and inviting.  The detail on the legs and the cheery fabric would make it a perfect addition to any Florida home – change up the fabric and finishes and it could work anywhere!

I used several of these sweaterweave chairs in a lobby installation.  Their high back and generous size encourage lounging.  Perfect for a lanai or patio – add a colorful fabric on the chair and you have a great spot to lounge and relax.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

So elegant, yet light and bright-  this chair by Century Furniture done up in white is just stunning!  Add a little “dress up” to your room!  You can always find a spot for a small table and this one is beautifully designed it can double for a piece of art.  Love all the shells and colors!

 

 

I saw this table recently and just fell in love with it.  Equally at home in a Cape home (Don’t be surprised if you see it in the reveal of my Chatham house – just may have to get it).  The combination of weathered rope, steel and distressed wood bring a hip, casual vibe to your decor.  It is also available in a side table as well.

 

 

The headboard on this Serena and Lily bed is just so detailed and pretty.  My daughter, Jillian dubbed it her favorite in the blog!  Paired with the Captiva Bedding, I think this combination is sure to be a winner.

 

The hardware on this Global Views chest really caught my eye.  Paired with the distressed wood, it could easily find a place in your Florida home.  And who could resist this amazing table made from driftwood pieces as its base??  Add a pretty lamp like the one below and your Florida home is almost ready for  the season!

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

When you head outdoors you’ll need room for all those guests coming to your Florida retreat which is why I chose this Pottery Barn table.  With its extensions it makes for a perfect large dining table!

After dinner, head over to this all weather sectional and your outdoor space is complete.  I just love the carefree style and indoor/outdoor living that Florida weather allows.  Sometimes I feel like by the time I get my Chatham house ready for the season, it’s over.  So count your blessings Floridians and treasure the beauty you have and the perfect weather that goes with it.
