Market Trends: Looks We Love!

A few weeks ago, we went down to High Point, North Carolina for the design market to see some of our favorite lines display their newest collections.  Usually, we leave with so many inspiring new ideas that it takes a few days to decompress and sort through all the wonderful pieces we saw.

This year, however, we just can’t stop thinking about all of the amazing colors on display at every showroom.  High Point was fully in bloom with some of the brightest, crispest, and most vibrant colors I’ve seen to date.  It seemed for a bit there that muted tones were really taking over, but now the biggest trend looking forward are these stunning, show-stopping hues… and we couldn’t be more excited about it!

We’ve put together a list of some of our favorite on-trend pieces, and we hope you enjoy them as much we do!

Color Feature: CANARY

After watching all of the glitz and glamour of the Golden Globes, I have not been able to stop thinking about some of the absolutely stunning yellow dresses we saw on the red carpet.  Yellow is such a vibrant, warm, and inviting hue that always seems to brighten up any face… or space!

Between all of the snow and crazy weather we’ve been having, it just seemed like the perfect time to look through some of my favorite canary yellow products, and share them with you all to help breathe a little bit of spring into your home!

While a vibrant yellow may be overpowering, I love it for an accent wall like this one!  Pops of canary in pillows and flowers tie the whole look together in such a gorgeous way.

J’Adore Décor!

Author: Jillian Hayward Schaible

If you read our blog often (or saw pictures from my wedding), you probably already know that vintage, romantic décor is my absolute favorite style.  What I love most about it is the warm, cozy feel that it brings to a room.  Often paired with calm, neutral tones, this style can have such a soothing effect.

I also love the idea that the style reflects the rich history of its era, and breathes such life into the design.  Sometimes, this style can be a bit difficult to achieve on your own… But, here are a few of my favorite looks to hopefully inspire you and give you some new ideas for how to get this look in your home, too!

I love a sturdy, rustic farmhouse table paired with neutral linen.  This is classic French country design, and a timeless look for your dining area.  I like to pair mine with a big bouquet of hydrangeas or peonies- simple, elegant, and soft.

With lots of neutral tones, it’s nice to add in pops of glitz like gold and silver to add a bit of sparkle to your décor!

Bella Cottage is one of my personal favorites- their pieces are simply beautiful.  I love the tufting here- it would be so comfy to lean up against if you like to read in bed, like I do!

Bella Cottage

Often in French country décor, you will find ornate, glamorous lighting paired with rustic or distressed pieces.  This adds so much depth to all of those neutral tones, and really steps your design up to the next level!

For a more casual room, you can channel that country look from nature, and use it in wallpaper and fresh flowers.  This Tempaper wallpaper is not only perfect for the style, it’s also temporary so that you can easily add or remove it any time you want to switch it up!

Stools like these from Frontgate have it all- I wish I had a counter like this in my house so that I could get some of my own!

I love the look of this wire basket chandelier!  This could be so fun for a big table outdoors, maybe even with some vines or ivy wrapped around.

It is so common to find distressed or “shabby chic” furniture to capture this look.  Annie Sloan chalk paint is easy enough to use yourself, and the best quality out there to get the style of paint you see here!

A Fall Festival for Your Front Door!

With all of the pumpkins, gourds, and other festive fall items popping up in grocery stores lately, it is the perfect time to have some fun decorating that front door of yours.  There are so many different ways to carve, paint, and stack your pumpkins- we just love these entries so much, we can practically smell the pumpkin spice just looking at them!  The best part about a festive fall door like one of these, is that it doesn’t just have to be for Halloween!

So this one might seem like it’s for the expert carver, but what we love most about this is the idea of a pumpkin flower pot for your autumn arrangement!

Sweater Weather That Isn’t Just For Your Wardrobe!

Yesterday in Boston it was 85 degrees, this morning it was 55!  Fall is in the air, and that means… sweater weather!  There’s nothing like a soft cozy sweater on a crisp day to warm you right up.  Why not switch up your home decor with some “sweaters” to cozy up your interiors as well?

One of my favorite “sweaters” is a fisherman knit afghan that my mom knitted for my bridal shower many years ago.  Every year it comes out with its long tassels, and finds a home draped over my sofa.  I like a cool house (even in the winter) so we use our throws a lot.

I like pillows to feel soft.  I love the old sweater look of this one.  It seems cable knit is in this year and it’s popping up on everything.  From pillows…

How to Create a Small Space with Big Style

I spend a lot of time helping my clients downsize into smaller spaces.  Selling the big house and moving into the condo in the city sounds great, right?  But what do you do in a smaller space with all of your stuff??  Finding ways to incorporate storage into everyday pieces has become easier thanks to a little creativity in your furniture purchases.

Cubes and floating shelves can store a lot and can do double duty as wall art.

Funky Front Porches

Author: Jillian Hayward Schaible

With all of the gorgeous summer nights we get to experience here in San Diego, I’ve been thinking about redesigning my front porch to be able to enjoy each sunset from the comfort of my own home.  There are so many ways to design a beautiful and functional porch regardless of how large or small your area may be.  Do you prefer to lounge out front in a rustic Adirondack chair?  Or perhaps cozy up to a nest or hammock?  There are so many options to choose from that can work in even the smallest of porches!

My husband and I live right by the beach, and love to spend our evenings outside grilling and enjoying the evenings from our porch.  Having a smaller area to work with, we’ve been looking for the perfect little bistro set to have a drink and some munchies on without using up too much space!

If you’re looking for something more traditional, you can never go wrong with paired rockers.  Brighten it up and add some personal style for each season with fun pillows like these!

When I see nests as comfortable-looking as this, I just want to curl up with a good book for hours, don’t you?

Personally, I’m a huge fan of whites and neutrals in the home, and I especially love the fresh, bright look it gives this porch.  I love the way they incorporated a little pop of color with that gorgeous turquoise bench!

Always a favorite, Kouboo knows how to add some serious style to a porch!  If you prefer to lounge in the backyard, try making a bold statement with tropical plants out front!

I love this idea for a family beach house.  Although they are the same style rocker, the differing colors add a fun edge- not to mention that each person can pick their own color.

Top 8 Picks From Vegas Market

It is with great excitement (and a motherly dose of pride) that I introduce you to my daughter, Jillian.  Jill has been my blogmaster extraordinaire since the inception of our blog.  She’s decided to take an even more active role in the company, and pursue her own extended degree in Interior Design.  Jill and I just returned from Las Vegas Market and I asked her to author this week’s feature blog.  So, Jill, here you go…

Author: Jillian Hayward Schaible

As you may have seen, Susan and I had a great time at the Las Vegas Market this summer!  We saw some of our favorite brands and designers, as well as met several new artists and familiarized ourselves with their work.   It was so inspiring to us to see so many of these collections, and wanted to take a moment to share with you some of our favorites!

1.  Feather Chandelier by Visual Comfort Lighting

This chandelier grabbed our attention almost instantly because of its unique and delicate nature.  We LOVE this chandelier so much, that we may even use it for a client here who loves this Gatsby-style, early 1900’s design!

2.  Marilyn Chair by Global Views

This one has been a favorite of Susan’s for a while, but seeing it in the showroom at Global Views was great to feel how smooth and heavy this chair is despite its light, airy look.  This is a great quality chair, and way more comfortable than it looks!

3.  Xaviera Stool by Christopher Guy

The showroom we were most excited to see was admittedly Christopher Guy.  The way that he designs his products is so unusual, that it creates a true feast for your senses just experiencing his artwork.  This stool was one of our favorites because of its classic, practical, yet signature look.  We think it would look great at a bar or counter to add just a little pizazz to your space with that elegant cross in back.

4.  Ocean-Inspired Chandeliers from Currey & Company

When we are looking for fun, funky, yet great quality lighting, Currey & Company is one of our go-to brands.  Their showroom at Market dazzled with their many ocean-inspired pieces, including these gorgeous chandeliers with sea shells and sea glass!  Any of these would be the perfect choice for a beach house- I could definitely see us showing one off in our Cape house this summer!

5.  Kharaa Pouf by Surya

Everywhere we went, it seemed that this look was taking over Market!  Furry chairs, pillows, sofas, poufs… you name it!  We loved the pouf and pillows by Surya because of how soft they were to the touch, yet we loved this blush color for more practical reasons over the stark white that has become so popular.  This would definitely be a bit more forgiving in a busy home, and oh so inviting to cozy up to!

6.  Chelsea Desk by Bungalow 5

Mirrored furniture can really expand the appearance of a room (see our post, Make Your Room Appear Bigger…WITHOUT Remodeling!), and this Chelsea Desk did just that.  It was paired with bright, vibrant oranges in the showroom that made the desk just sparkle.  If you love a contemporary style, this is the desk for you!

8.   Pillows by Langdon Ltd.

One of my personal favorites from Market was meeting Phoebe from Langdon Ltd. and learning about her gorgeous textiles.  They are all hand woven, and of wonderful quality.  We got a few pillows to try out in our West Coast office, where they will be the perfect addition to the sunny, laid back style of California.  We can’t wait to show them off!

Which Bed Is Right For You?

Do you watch tv in bed?  Or sit up and read?  Maybe you need an upholstered headboard.

Does your bed face a window with a beautiful view?  Maybe a headboard with a mirror.

Do you want your headboard to be a feature wall?  Try something unusual and artistic.

Are you short on space for nightstands?  Perhaps a headboard with attached small nightstands may fit in your space.

These are the first questions I ask my clients when I am designing a bedroom.  Your bed is one of the most important pieces of furniture in your home.  We spend 30% of our lives in bed.  After a good mattress, a solid bed to put it on is critical.  Once you’ve determined the function of your bed and headboard, then you determine the style – and there are so many to choose from.  Here are some of our favorites that just may inspire you to have the form that follows function and to get the perfect bed for a good night’s sleep!
