1. Clear the clutter

That’s right, it’s time to open up those window and start your spring-cleaning.  This year, as you’re shaking out the rugs and dusting off your shelves, toss out what you don’t use anymore and organize the rest.  The best way to freshen up your home this spring is to neaten up your living spaces and clear off those tables and counter tops. A clutter-free home will brighten your place instantly, without having to break the bank.  The one mistake most of us make after a cleaning spree is not having practical and accessible storage to avoid the clutter we all know will inevitably build…  This year, try fighting the most common clutter-causing offenders with a simple key hook/mail holder ($15.95 at Walhub) or one of these gorgeous Senegalese storage baskets from Serena & Lily.

2. Create a warmer welcome

House

Who wants to drive up to a drab and dismal house every day?  Brightening up your front porch and entryway is the perfect way to set the stage for a fresh new outlook on your springtime tune-up.

For a quick and easy solution, try adding a few potted or hanging plants from your local garden center to your porch or front steps.

For those of you who may want to spend a bit more time out in the garden, try sprucing up your driveway or front walkway by planting a row of daisies or tulips.

3. Swap out the small stuff

One of the quickest and most inexpensive ways to freshen up a room is to change out little things like your throw pillows, lampshades, and mats.  This is instant gratification! We recommend coordinating your new lamps/shades with throw pillows to give each room a fun, fresh new vibe, like these festive embroidered pillow covers and burlap tapered drum lampshades from Pottery Barn.

4. Change out your linens

Every now and then, it’s time to ditch the old towels and sheets and spring for a new set.  This year, give your bathroom a pop of color with a set of brightly printed towels, or bring some flowers into your bedroom with an embellished duvet like this one from Anthropologie that we just love!

5. Freshen up your kitchen

Funky new placemats, table runners, and fruit bowls are easy things to have fun with showcasing your new springtime style..  Try using floral serving papers in your platters when entertaining for an even more festive approach!  I love Vintage Italian Rosette Serving Papers from Sur La Table!  Use as disposable placemats for your next al fresco dinner!  And what is more welcoming than a cheery fruit bowl brimming with the fruits of the season! 6. Fight the fur

furminatorMedDogLongHairUntil I visited my daughter’s house a few weeks ago, I never understood why everyone complained so much about their dogs shedding this time of year.  Well, having seen the enormous clumps of hair that appear in the corners of the room and the steady stream of fur that my little 6 month old grand-puppy, Rocco, would deposit all over the house gave me a new appreciation for the plight of all you dog owners out there.  As an interior designer, I recommend picking up a few extra rugs for your non-carpeted areas in colors similar to that of your dog’s coat; Shaking out a rug every few days is much easier than vacuuming the whole house an extra time.  And, as a doggy grandma, I will give you the same advice Rocco’s trainer gave us- buy a FURminator deShedding tool from your pet store to get rid of the fur before it’s on your floor!

7. Get outside!

Isn’t the best part about spring getting out and enjoying the gorgeous weather?  It’s time to spruce up the patio and break out the grill for many warm days ahead!  Whether you want to enjoy a few drinks outside on a cute little bistro set or host a barbeque this spring, we all need patio furniture that can hold out in the rain and store easily.  That’s why our pick of the season is this cute and practical all-weather wicker set from Pottery Barn.   Chairs are stackable and table folds down for easy winter storage!
