It seems really strange not thinking about getting anyone ready to go back to school this year. We had either one kid or another in college for 7 straight years. This was about the time that I’d try to start dropping subtle hints to Justin and Jillian about making a list of things they need, and trying to get them motivated to start some back to school shopping. Even though there’s no one heading off this year, I still love looking at all the new and innovative ideas that come up each fall. Instead of giving you MY recommendations, I’ve enlisted Jillian’s help (since she is 1 year post grad) to make a list of her recommendations of everything- from product and dorm decorating ideas, to how to survive your first roommate! So, take it away Jill!
Jillian’s First (and second, third and fourth) Year College Survival Tips
Whether you’re a seasoned pro or a newbie freshman, you know that you’re going to be living in some pretty tight quarters. The number one MOST IMPORTANT thing to keep in mind is STORAGE! One of the biggest mistakes we make as college kids is not having places to put anything, therefore leading to a dirty-looking, cluttered space. So, I was always on the hunt for cool furniture pieces that incorporate storage, too!
The next thing you’re going to want to invest in is some comfy, easy-to-store furniture that won’t take up too much space (and also won’t break the bank). This can either be chairs that fold up and get stored in your closet, or multi-use furniture like the futon, so that you’ll have seats for your friends when they come over. (We’ve all been there when your apartment is a little “over capacity” and your friends are sitting on the floor or sleeping on sofa cushions… ) Here are some ways you can avoid the bruises!
Whether you love your roommate or not, let’s face it, you’re going to need a little peace and quiet sometimes. This tent is genius. It even comes in full size OR bunk bed style!
Here are just a few things I wish I had when I was in college.. A scarf organizer for your closet, and a hamper on wheels! Even if your laundry room is in the same building, trust me when I say you will NEVER do laundry until your hamper is completely overflowing. Tie it all up and roll it down to the laundry room, and laundry day won’t be quite as bad!
