In Interior Design, we get our color trends from everyday life: colors that show up in clothing, accessories, sometimes even cars! So, when a new season is approaching, I really try to study everything I see and make some assumptions on what new color may be emerging as a trend for home decor. And what I have been seeing everywhere are… shades of green; But not just any green, more of a subdued, muted, “olive” green.
And since the color “olive green” brings back horrible visions of the 1980’s , I am going out on a limb here and renaming it “GARDEN GREEN”! Doesn’t that sound so much fresher and crisper than drab “olive”?? Why “Garden Green”? – think nature and everything from florals to vegetables, and those are all the beautiful colors I’m seeing. Look in the fall gardens at all the beautiful succulents and different color stems, the vegetable garden, and its beautiful shades of muted greens.
As you may know from past blogs, I had the pleasure of meeting Lisa Newsom and getting a copy of her new book VERANDA The Art of Outdoor Living. It’s been on my coffee table all summer and I’ve been “vacationing” in those beautiful gardens ever since. (For those of you that haven’t seen it, I suggest going on Amazon.com right now and ordering it!)
In looking through the book, filled with GARDEN GREEN, every garden is spectacular, no matter what other colors are there – in flowers, furniture, and accessories. What does that mean? Not only is GARDEN GREEN beautiful and versatile but it is virtually a neutral. You can pair it with almost anything!
Here are some of my favorite GARDEN GREEN products from some of my favorite places! Think artichoke, asparagus, leeks, and what about the beautiful yellow-green of a limelight hydrangea! So, let’s think green in a new way – out goes “olive” and “avocado” and IN come the GARDEN GREENS of Fall!!! So, what do you think??? Is Garden Green the new fall color 2014?
