For years, it seemed the most important part of designing a family room was what to do with the TV!  Everyone had to have it in the room (complete with surround sound), but they also wanted to find a way to “hide it”.  I’ve had so many conversations with clients about this trend, and my first question is, “If I build you the perfect ‘hideout’ for your TV, will you ever use it”?  My clients would laugh as they unanimously would say, “NO”!  At that point, I would usually just tell them that the TV is part of the room so let’s just face it and incorporate it into the design!

Nowadays, I have clients asking for more “low-tech” rooms.  It is a beautiful trend to have a quiet space with no TV or electronics.  It is where conversation, relaxation, reading, and family time reigns.  Alleluia! Whether it be a coastal retreat or a cottage on the lake, the trend back to “family rooms” is here and I couldn’t be happier.

Here are some beautiful “low tech rooms” with fireplaces, cozy seating, and board games.  Take a look, get inspired and “DISCONNECT!”
