Holiday Gift Guide: FOR THE BOHO BABE

With Jillian out in California, we see so much of this laid-back, boho design.  Come to think of it, I could easily see most of these items finding their way into her house!

It doesn’t get much more laid-back than a tropical tapestry like this one.  I love the way they’ve styled it here with these calm, neutral tones.

A Tale of 2 Weddings: Classic Cape Cod and Vintage Romance

Summer 2015 was the summer of weddings at the Hayward house.  Justin and Lydia were married in June, and Jillian and Christian in September.  In one summer, my family doubled!  How lucky I am to have 2 new “children”!

As different as Justin and Jillian are, so were their weddings.  Justin and Lydia met when they were 15 years old in Chatham.  Lydia’s family also has a summer home there, so they have so many memories of summers together on the beaches of Cape Cod.  Their wedding was a perfect June day and their celebration was quintessential Cape Cod.  From the bridesmaids’ vibrant blue Lilly Pulitzer dresses, to the hydrangea bouquets, to the barnboard and nautical rope accents, their wedding was Classic Cape Cod!

Jillian and Christian met in college at rival schools (Jill at BU, Christian at BC) and wanted something a little closer to Boston.  Jillian loves the vintage, shabby chic look, and Christian is an old soul that would have been right at home decades ago.  Their wedding reflected their love of all things vintage with their venue at Alden Castle, along with its dark wood panels and crystal chandeliers, blush colored garden roses and hand painted signage, reclaimed wood boards and groomsmen in black tuxedos and bow ties, their wedding was Vintage Romance.

Bermuda Blues

I just came back from Bermuda, one of my favorite places!  With its turquoise blue waters and laid back lifestyle (and less than 2 hours from Boston!), it’s the perfect getaway for those of us on the East coast.  My husband, Everett, and I took off for a long weekend to celebrate our wedding anniversary.  We stayed at our favorite place, the Pompano Beach Club in Southampton Parish.  Brothers Larry and Tim Lamb are always visible and accessible owners of this once fishing village.  The beach is probably one of the most beautiful anywhere!  In low tide you can walk for miles in crystal blue waters.

Although my trip is over and I’m back in Boston, I’m still thinking about those beautiful Bermuda blues!  Here are some ideas that were inspired by the turquoise waters!

Simple yet elegant.  I just love this collection, orchids and all!

The chest in the corner by Wisteria reminds me of a chest in an old beachside inn- the color is a simple powder blue.  Paired with a neutral chair, an ottoman, and some great texture, and it takes on a whole different feel!

Wisteria

I hate it when a room looks “too decorated”.  I tell my clients that not everything has to come out of the same box-  it’s not supposed to look like a set.  I just love the casual tablecloth over the weathered wood and turqoise linen chair.  The bright navy stripes on the bench are just the “surprise” this room needs.

Wisteria

Wisteria

Yes, it’s simple and some would even say stark, but  I look at it as a beautiful canvas to add your own personal touches.  Perhaps a vintage dish for soap and a pottery vase?  Super fluffy white towels and a great rug, and the room would take on a whole different feel.

Just the little trim around these placemats and napkin rings from our friends at Kouboo (who we love! so please visit them at www.kouboo.com)  makes a simple white dish look not so simple after all!

Change with the seasons;  shells in the Summer, succulents in the Fall, some floating lilies in the spring, and colored glass balls in the winter?  This beautiful dish will change along with your whims.

Surfer’s Paradise

No surprise that this week’s blog idea is Jillian’s!  She’s living the California dream, and that wouldn’t be complete without a surfboard or two.  But how do you bring that “California dreamer” lifestyle into your everyday decor without looking too….surfer shack??

Retire an old surf board as wall decor?  Sure!  As long as you keep the tiki lanterns, shells and rattan to a different space.  So if you want the look, remember: less is best, and a little goes a long way!

Get some pointers from these rooms that would be any Surfer’s Paradise!

Surf Lisbon

You don’t have to have the surfboard for wall art – instead, find a poster that conveys the same feel.  Add a surfer pillow or two and your room is accessorized!

Maybe you just want the feel without the beach motifs?  By using soft blues, whites, green, yellow, and tan, your room will still have that easy breezy feeling!

Sanibel, and Everything Shells!

I just got back from a beautiful week in Sanibel, Florida, home to some of the East Coast’s best shell treasures.  Picture miles of beach, strewn with shells of all colors, shapes, and sizes!  The “Sanibel stoop” is a position most seen beachside from all of the beachcombers collecting treasures!

I loved the “whimsy” seen all over the island.  Bicycles are the mode of transportation and allow for endless rides down beautiful beach roads and into some Victorian-style neighborhoods.  One thing that caught my eye was the “one-of-a-kind” mailboxes I saw.  Every street was lined with an assortment of fun, unique, and truly extraordinary finds.

When we weren’t biking, we were out kayaking.  The search through the mangroves for alligators came up dry, but the view above was amazing – a bird watchers delight!!

Mangroves

All that exercise meant a reward at the end of the day- a fabulous dinner.  Of all the great restaurants we visited, none could compare to the Blue Coyote Supper Club, located at the Sanibel Golf Course.  Owner Mitch Schwenke has done an amazing job of creating a visual and delectable treat in his newest restaurant.

Before I start on the food, I have to tell you about the beautiful decor.  The unique hand-blown glass chandelier, pendants, and bar lights are just beautiful!  The bar features a blue glass tile back that just glows throughout the entire restaurant.  The Blue Coyote theme is based upon the Coyote Series, inspired by the Joni Mitchell song, “Coyote”, and was created by Michigan native Markus Pierson in 1986.

BCSInterior_1

BCSInterior_4

Normally philosophical, entrepreneurial, or romantic in nature, the “Coyotes” are a metaphor for people. They are a symbol of pursuing your dreams, wearing your heart on your sleeve, and celebrating all of life’s ups and downs.

above_all

The “Gallery” within the Blue Coyote offers both Originals and Limited Print Editions for sale, many of them celebrating the 25th Anniversary of the series. It’s a must see whether a quick introductory look after your meal, or a personal tour in the afternoon.

And now for the food.  Everything that came out of the kitchen was a feast for the eyes as well as the tummy!!  We left full and happy with the addition of a new restaurant to add to our list of favorites.

MisoSeaBass

So if you need a place to escape from the cold, consider Sanibel.  You’ll be happy you did!

Welcome, 2015! “I do”!!

What a year 2015 will be for the Hayward house!  We will be adding 2 new members to our family – our son, Justin, will be marrying Lydia, his childhood sweetheart, in a summer wedding on Cape Cod.  And good things come in two’s – our daughter, Jillian, will be heading home from San Diego, with her fiancé, Christian,  for a fall wedding in the Boston area.

As different as my children are, so will be their weddings!  Justin and Lydia will be having a traditional, beachy, Cape Cod affair, hoping for a beautiful day to take advantage of our Chatham ocean views.  Jillian and Christian, on the other hand, will be looking forward to a “vintage, rustic” wedding in a beautifully restored “castle”.

I don’t want to give away any secrets from the future brides and grooms to be, so instead I thought I would put together some ideas of beach and vintage themed weddings!

For the beach inspired wedding, here are some ideas.  Simple tablescapes using natural elements and soft colors are always winners for a summer wedding.

Holiday Gift Guide, Day 4: For the Beach Bum

I love coastal-inspired design.  Even in the middle of a New England winter, seeing something that reminds me of the ocean brings home a little summer.  Here are some ideas for your beach-loving family and friends.

Yes, we’ve all seen the beachy wreath.  I love this one because of the uniqueness of the driftwood, so no two are alike.   For a little more one-of-a-kind design, try these fun, brightly colored, picket fence fishes.

A little bit of heaven….in Turks and Caicos

Living in Boston during the winter is always a challenge, but never as much as this year.  Our winter has been endless!  I needed some warm air and sunshine… So, my husband, Everett, and I went online and booked a vacation in Turks and Caicos, at the Grace Bay Club.  Usually, I rely on friends and family for recommendations, but this year it was the internet.  Not sure what we were in for, off we went.  As the taxi pulled up to this beautiful British inspired hotel, we were greeted with cool towels and rum punch!  Okay, now we’re talking!

As soon as I walked into the hotel lobby I was in awe.

My own Interior Designer crush,Thom Filicia, was the amazing talent behind the beautiful space.  I LOVE Thom Filicia’s style and have used it A LOT in my own home.  Last year, I had the great pleasure of meeting him in Boston and found him to be utterly charming.  His fame has not tarnished his amazing wit and fun-loving casual (yet amazingly elegant!)  approach to design.

His influence in the resort’s lobby is just so inviting that you feel more like you’re in someone’s very stylish and chic living room instead of a hotel!

After check-in, we met our “personal concierges”, Berg and Boda, and were given a cell phone to call them anywhere, anytime!  How’s that for service?!  When we arrived to our bedroom we were greeted with a beautiful, spacious room with the most amazing view ever – designed by none other than Mother Nature.

Turks VIew

Naturally, we couldn’t wait to throw on our suits and head for the beach.

Turks Beach

Now here’s where Grace Bay Club really begins to shine…  From the moment we got out of the taxi to the last minutes of our stay, every staff member at Grace Bay treated us like we were family staying in their home.  The beach attendants were already getting our chairs ready, towels out and cold water waiting by the time our toes hit the sand!

Need some time out of the sun?  Go for a dip or sit poolside in one of the covered cabanas.  As you can see, my husband wasted no time jumping into that crystal clear pool!

Grace Bay Club, Turks and Caicos

We dined at their restaurants, had afternoon tea in at the open air “Grille”, went to a barbecue “on the beach”, and had evenings cocktails at the gorgeous Infinity Bar.

My husband, Everett, is a professional photographer and saw a framed photograph at the hotel and just had to find out where it was taken so he could go there and photograph it himself.  He enlisted the help of Dave, the head of water sports and found out where it was…on a separate small Cay about a 10 minute boat ride away.

Well, after a failed attempt to get there on the tow boat pulling a banana boat, Dave could sense my husband’s disappointment.  He called his boss and got the OK to take us for a quick boat trip there himself at the end of his work day.  Why?  Because that’s what they do at Grace Bay Club.  They want every minute of your vacation to be perfect!

One day after a very long 5 mile walk on the beach, we headed back towards our room a little weary with arms full of beautiful conch shells we had found and wanted to bring back home.  We were met by Boda, our personal concierge who took our shells, had them cleaned, wrapped for travel and in a a bag in our room ready for the trip home!  Now that’s service!

My family and I have been very fortunate to have stayed at amazing resorts and hotels and we have visited countless beautiful islands.  So, what was it about the Grace Bay Club that made our vacation so special?   The people!  Hats off to GM Thierry Grandsire.  You have created a very special place filled with very special people.  We will be back!!  So, if you feel the need to escape and want to go somewhere with turquoise waters and ocean breezes, if you want to be totally pampered and treated like family, you need to go to the Grace Bay Club.  It’s a little bit of heaven…in Turks!
