How to Give Your Closet a Makeover

First of all, we want to start by saying we hope this blog finds you happy and healthy in your home during these tough times.  We have been thinking about you all, and how we can help share some ideas for projects that we can all do while bunkered down at home.

A few friends have told us that re-organizing their closet is at the top of their lists.  So, we wanted to share some of our favorite ideas with you to help get your creative juices flowing and those closets looking fresh and tidy!

For a traditional take on a closet system, this one incorporates soft storage components which can help to save space and be a bit more versatile.  You can pick and choose which items best suit your needs, and create your own layout accordingly (i.e. Need two (or three or four…) extra shoe hangers?  No problem!)

West Elm

If you love the idea of a system but don’t quite have the closet space, try using that big empty wall in your bedroom instead!  Who says you need to hide all those gorgeous clothes and accessories, anyways?

Pottery Barn

Or, if bedroom space is tight, try an open rack with shoe storage.  Bonus: handbag and accessory storage on the side!

Urban Outfitters

Maybe you don’t have enough closet space, but you’re not into having everything out on display.  We get it.  An armoire is a great way to keep your things out of sight and add a gorgeous statement piece in your bedroom.

Can’t decide?  A little bit hidden, and a little on display, this piece from IKEA won’t break the bank.  Plus, has a super convenient sliding bamboo door.

I love ladders for extra storage, and these ones are unique twists on the classic.  They’re perfect for hanging your favorite scarves, throw blankets, or towels.

If you’re like us, it may seem like there is just never enough shoe storage to hold all those beauties.  We really like this one because it has storage of all different sizes.  (I don’t know about you, but we can never fit boots and heels in those regular pockets!)

And if you’ve already run out of room in your closet, we’ve got you covered.

Getting in Bed with Organic

We all know that when it comes to what we put in our bodies, organic is always better.  So, shouldn’t that count for the linens we spend 8 hours of every day wrapped up in?  Chemical dyes and additives can irritate the skin, and our skin is, after all, the largest organ in our bodies!

Luckily, going organic in our bedrooms doesn’t mean that we have to forfeit style!  There are plenty of companies getting on board, and we’ve picked a few of our favorite looks to share with you.

Vanity Tables Do Double Duty

“Where can I put on my makeup?”  That’s one of the first questions I get when designing master bedrooms and baths.   Sometimes we can add some space to the vanity, sometimes it’ll go in the bedroom, and most of the time it has the capacity to serve many functions.  Some of these vanities that we love have fun ideas that may just inspire you to change up yours!

Try adding a larger tilt mirror to your vanity to serve as a full length mirror.

Our Favorite Summer Whites

There’s nothing lighter and airier than a breezy white curtain blowing in a summer wind.  But why only bring out the whites between Memorial Day and Labor Day?  For a fresh look 12 months a year, add a soft summer white and keep a little summer in your home year round.

I love the whitewashed woods mixed with the creamy neutrals.  The Kouboo Chandelier just completes the room.

Pick Your Perfect Bed!

Things go in cycles.  Lately I’ve been designing a lot of bedrooms – master bedrooms, guest bedrooms, children’s bedrooms.  The first thing I do when I start a project..any project..is ask lots of questions. In a bedroom, that can get personal.  Do you sit up in bed? How tall are you?  Do you need storage?  Do you need other space (desk, child’s toy area, etc.)

So, why all the questions?  A bookworm may like a comfy, upholstered headboard.  A shorter person may like a lower platform bed.  A taller person may not want a footboard.  Small room?  Limited storage?  Perhaps a bed with storage drawers.  Odd wall or want to make a statement?  A canopy may be the answer.  Here are some different styles to help you find the bed that is perfect for you!

Upholstered Headboard

This is a great option if you like to sit up in bed, or just for a feeling of cozy!  Styles vary – tall, short, tufted, nailhead, the choices are unlimited!  An upholstered bed can also be changed with a fabric swap when you are looking to freshen things up!

Just look at how dramatic the fuschia on this headboard is!!!

Wood, Metal, Natural Fibers

Painted or stained, a wood frame bed can be used in traditional or contemporary settings.  Headboard only, or four poster?  A metal frame can be used in a more contemporary setting, and natural fibers are a great choice for a coastal home.

Storage bed

When choosing a bed with storage drawers, make sure you have enough room to open the drawers fully and that they do not hit any other pieces of furniture such a nightstands.  Helpful hint: Beds that sit directly on the floor without a platform have no toespace and can be challenging when making the bed!!

Bedroom Basics: What You Need, and Why

This cold New England winter has meant a lot more time at home, and that gives us ALL time to walk around and see what needs some sprucing up.  I’ve gotten lots of calls for help with bedrooms lately.  There are so many beautiful options available in everything from furniture to linens, so I thought it was a good time to share some of my favorites with you.  The most important part of the bedroom and where you spend 8 hours a day (okay, so maybe not always 8 hours!) is laying in bed.  This should be the most important purchase you make.  First and most important, go shopping and buy a good quality, comfortable mattress! After that the rest is easy!!

Bed-  Go For the Cozy!

I have to say, I love an upholstered headboard.  It’s comfy to sit up against, feels warm, and can be reupholstered and changed to fit your changing tastes and decor!  What about a footboard?  Personal preference!  If you’re tall you may not want one.  Also, if you want the feeling of more room around the bed, perhaps not.  A canopy over the headboard is another great option if you want something a little different, but not the traditional 4 poster style.

Bedding

Your bedding should be an investment in yourself.  Go for super soft and luxurious.  You’ll sleep better and it will be worth the money you spent.  I’ve found beautiful Egyptian cotton sheets on sale and at discount stores for almost the same price as the “standard” stuff!  Keep an eye on white sales and stock up!

Nightstands- Mismatched… And With Storage!

The days of the matchy-matchy nightstands is (thankfully!) gone.  I love a large nightstand, and my husband prefers a smaller one.  I love to have a drawer to stash things, he prefers more of a table top – the styles, sizes and shapes are endless.  This is where you can add a little fun and personality to your bedroom!

Bedrooms have come a long way, and they are the perfect place to create your personal haven.  It’s the one space you are designing just for YOU, not for guests, so make it personal, and sleep well!!

Get the Look, Bedrooms: Romantic Vintage vs. Sleek Contemporary

The last time I redecorated my bedroom was when my son, Justin, was 4 years old.  Now he’s 26 and getting married in June.  Yes, I’ve made the small changes – new bedding, draperies, carpet.  But I haven’t changed the mood of the room… and that’s where I’m at now.  I’ve narrowed it down to Romantic Vintage or Sleek Contemporary.  Yes, they are polar opposites but what they have in common is that each look can be dramatic.  I go through the same process in my home as I would in yours.  I go through magazines, catalogues, the internet, and Houzz(!) looking for inspiration.  I thought I’d share some of them with you and perhaps enlist some help??

Romantic Vintage is that “cozy, crawl under the covers” look that is soft and (perhaps a little too??) feminine.  The look is created by using layers in bedding as well as accessories.  I love it but can’t decide if it’s too fussy for me??  Romantic Vintage makes me feel a bit like I have traveled back in time, or perhaps just traveled, since it gives me a European feel like this bedroom below.  I love the soft lines of the furniture and the coziness of the space.

Then we have Sleek Contemporary – harder lines, stronger colors, more linear, less curves, more tailored, and less fussy.  Here’s a look at both!

Sleek Contemporary very often works best in urban spaces where space is a premium.  This bed is a great alternative to a bed with drawers.  Sometimes I find those drawers a little clumsy and the sizes don’t always work.  This is one great big space that really can make a difference in a small room.
