The last time I redecorated my bedroom was when my son, Justin, was 4 years old.  Now he’s 26 and getting married in June.  Yes, I’ve made the small changes – new bedding, draperies, carpet.  But I haven’t changed the mood of the room… and that’s where I’m at now.  I’ve narrowed it down to Romantic Vintage or Sleek Contemporary.  Yes, they are polar opposites but what they have in common is that each look can be dramatic.  I go through the same process in my home as I would in yours.  I go through magazines, catalogues, the internet, and Houzz(!) looking for inspiration.  I thought I’d share some of them with you and perhaps enlist some help??

Romantic Vintage is that “cozy, crawl under the covers” look that is soft and (perhaps a little too??) feminine.  The look is created by using layers in bedding as well as accessories.  I love it but can’t decide if it’s too fussy for me??  Romantic Vintage makes me feel a bit like I have traveled back in time, or perhaps just traveled, since it gives me a European feel like this bedroom below.  I love the soft lines of the furniture and the coziness of the space.

Then we have Sleek Contemporary – harder lines, stronger colors, more linear, less curves, more tailored, and less fussy.  Here’s a look at both!

This bed and lighting from Restoration Hardware looks like they were made for royalty!  But is that the look I’m going for??

 

 

Matouk bedding is as luxurious as it gets.  Layered on this vintage iron bed, it is just beautifully romantic.

 

 

Do I want something sweet for case goods like this chest by Serena and Lily or something a little more substantial like the one by Ralph Lauren Home???

 

 

No matter what I choose I just love this Pug Bench by Bunny Williams Home and Decorative Ball from Kouboo – that one may end up in the Chatham house!  Add some lights and a statement mirror and Romantic Vintage starts to come together.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Sleek Contemporary

 

And now we have Sleek Contemporary – WOW, couldn’t be more different!  When I think of contemporary, fun, and colorful, I can’t help but head over to Jonathan Adler.  I think I could take my shoes off and just settle into this room.

 

 

And in my alternate reality where I have a loft condo overlooking the city lights this would probably be my choice – a little retro!

 

 

I’m not sure what it is about this chandelier that appeals to me but it does.  I love the round balls on the extension bar and the intertwining linear pieces look almost sculptural, as does this simple mirror.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

I love this Whitaker Chair.  I love the tufted back and the scoop seat that just looks like it is asking to be sat in.  And the Caracus Side Table is just another substitute for a piece of art!

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Sleek Contemporary very often works best in urban spaces where space is a premium.  This bed is a great alternative to a bed with drawers.  Sometimes I find those drawers a little clumsy and the sizes don’t always work.  This is one great big space that really can make a difference in a small room.
