A Vintage Affair

February in Boston is never my favorite time of year, and this year it’s even less.  With over 3 feet of snow on the ground and another foot forecast for the weekend, I’m trying my best to find something redeemable about the time of year.  Next week is Valentine’s Day and a good excuse to get out of the winter doldrums and spruce things up.

Valentine’s Day decor always brings me back to my vintage china and tablecloths.  I find myself pulling out my grandmother’s china cups and lace doilies, and doing a lot more “layering” and “cozying up” with nostalgic items than I do any other time of the year.  This year it’s been especially fun because my daughter, Jillian, has chosen a “vintage” theme for her September wedding.  So, with everything I’m pulling out of the hope chest I’m thinking of wedding bells.   Here are some vintage inspirations that just take me back in time to a quieter place and space.  Maybe they will inspire you for Valentine’s Day, or to just slow down a little and take a trip back in time for your next winter event!  Enjoy!

I would love to see any of your vintage themed ideas!  I have a wedding to plan and need all the inspiration I can get!!

Welcome, 2015! “I do”!!

What a year 2015 will be for the Hayward house!  We will be adding 2 new members to our family – our son, Justin, will be marrying Lydia, his childhood sweetheart, in a summer wedding on Cape Cod.  And good things come in two’s – our daughter, Jillian, will be heading home from San Diego, with her fiancé, Christian,  for a fall wedding in the Boston area.

As different as my children are, so will be their weddings!  Justin and Lydia will be having a traditional, beachy, Cape Cod affair, hoping for a beautiful day to take advantage of our Chatham ocean views.  Jillian and Christian, on the other hand, will be looking forward to a “vintage, rustic” wedding in a beautifully restored “castle”.

I don’t want to give away any secrets from the future brides and grooms to be, so instead I thought I would put together some ideas of beach and vintage themed weddings!

For the beach inspired wedding, here are some ideas.  Simple tablescapes using natural elements and soft colors are always winners for a summer wedding.

Style Me Pretty

For the vintage inspired wedding, you may want to try one of these.  Soft, pastel colors, “shabby chic” pieces, and lots of candles will help to create that vintage, rustic feel.

2015 will be a blissfully busy year full of wedding planning and events.  I’m so excited for the new additions to our family!  What’s new for you in 2015?  Any weddings in your future?  I’d love to feature some of your ideas!

GET THE LOOK: Pair Rustic with Luxe

Juxtaposing two completely opposite styles in your home can sometimes be genius, or a total disaster.  Two styles that WE love to pair up are rustic and luxe!  Choosing your large pieces of furniture to be more rustic will allow for you to choose glamorous accents and décor that will really pop!

For your bed, choosing a rustic frame like this one from Serena & Lily makes for the perfect canvas to add luxurious bedding.  Bedding with silk, rosettes, or ruffles would be perfect on a bed like this to really jazz it up and add a more romantic feel!

Once you’ve decided on your bedding, add a glitzy mirror like this one from Frontgate over a wooden dresser.  This is the perfect time to choose some “over-the-top” vintage décor!

When choosing “rustic” furniture, weathered finishes are always a great chose.  This demi lune chest from Studio A is simple, yet perfect for a shimmery lamp like this one!

For the Dining Room

Simple, plank dining tables look great in both small and large spaces.  For small spaces, they are great for making the room seem less cluttered, and for larger spaces, they are the perfect base for a glamorous chandelier and luxurious seating.

This acacia wood bowl is hand turned from farm grown wood, and the capiz edge would make it a great serving bowl in a “rustically luxurious” kitchen!

When buying a rustic sofa, make sure that you are buying good quality leather and a sturdy frame that will make your “worn” look still a comfortable one, and one that will last!

I LOVE these accents to sprinkle in some luxe to your rustic seating!  Choose something sparkly, like the Anatolia side table or the Gabby Pouf to compliment your worn leather sofa and wooden lamp!
