3 Ways to Shop for a Pet-Friendly Rug

By: Jillian Schaible

Buying a new rug for your home can seem like a daunting task.  There are so many materials, colors, and styles to choose from that you might not know where to begin.  On top of that, making sure you choose the right one for your pets can be even tougher.

Many of our clients come to us needing new rugs to replace ones that just didn’t hold up in their household over time.  It’s important to know how what foot traffic will be like in these areas, and to especially consider any furry family members that will be sharing the space.

When we shop for homes with pets, there are three simple guidelines we like to follow.

1.  Choose the right material

The most important aspect of your rug’s durability is first and foremost the material.  Our two “go-to” choices are wool and indoor/outdoor.

Wool: If you prefer a cozier feel on your feet, you’ll want to choose wool.  A good wool rug can last a lifetime, and we love how easy they are to clean.

Safavieh

Indoor/Outdoor
: If you don’t mind something with a flatter weave, it doesn’t get more pet-proof than this.  Many of these rugs can be taken outside and hosed off.  How’s that for easy cleaning?!  They may not last quite as long as a wool rug, but they are often much less expensive.

Pottery Barn

2.  Consider the pile

We find that rugs with a low, cut pile are the best option for long-term durability and wear.  If you have cats or dogs, a rug with a loop pile may not be the best choice, as their nails can pull on the loops and cause them to become uneven or unravel.  A cut pile, or even a flatweave, will stay looking great for years to come!

3. Consider the pattern and color

For hiding those muddy paw prints, you’ll want to consider the same rule of thumb we use for high traffic areas- nothing too light and nothing too dark.  On the other hand, you’ll want to also think about your pet’s fur color and how much she sheds.

For example, if you have a Golden Retriever with very light fur, you’ll want to choose something in the same warm color family.  A navy rug, for instance, would show every bit of fur on there!

Choosing a rug that has a pattern or texture will also keep a cleaner look.  A solid color rug is more apt to show dirt and fur vs. a pattern that helps to distract the eye from these things.

We know firsthand how designing a pet-friendly home can sometimes be a challenge.  Luckily, even with a big, furry guy like Rocco around, there are plenty of great ways to keep your home looking fresh!

3 Quick & Easy Ways to Update Your Room Today

By: Jillian Schaible

Something about the changing of seasons always makes me want to freshen up my home.

In Fall, it’s all about bringing in those warm tones and spicy smells (hello, pumpkin spice everything!).  Winter, of course, with holiday decor and plenty of oh-so-cozy textures. Spring and summer are my favorite times to lighten the place up and give my home a fresh, breezy feel.

Of course you can’t go changing everything in your home every time you crave a new look, but luckily there are a few quick and easy things you CAN do that will totally revamp your room.

Change Out Your Window Treatments

This is most easily done if you have curtain panels.  Go out to your favorite home decor spot and browse through the panels to find a new color, print, or texture that you want to try out.  You’ll be surprised at what a huge difference this makes!  Tip: Make sure you take a photo of your room to bring with you so that you can get a good idea of what will look best.

Update Your Rugs

For the biggest “WOW” factor, replacing an area rug is the way to go.  However, this can often be a daunting task, not to mention pricey.  If that’s not in your budget, new floor mats are the next best thing, and give you a good bang for your buck. Think: doormats, kitchen mats, and bath mats.  There are so many different options here, and we love to get a little funky!

Give Your Linen Closet a Makeover

Updating your kitchen?  Find some cute new dish towels and oven mitts to display.  Table linens such as placemats, napkins, tablecloths, and runners will make your dining room look brand new.  In your bedroom, the most obvious change will be to find some new bedding.

When I want to change up a room, sometimes instant gratification is the most satisfying.  In this case, I usually go to one of my favorite nearby stores that carries everything I need (try HomeGoods, Pier 1, Anthropologie, Pottery Barn, or West Elm).  Load up that cart, and get shopping!

What are your favorite home decor stores?  Are you an online shopper or a one-stop-shopper?  Let us know in the comments!

Spring Forward With Your Design

With all of these crazy New England storms, I can’t help but dream of the warmer days ahead (hopefully sooner rather than later!).  Longer days and beautiful Spring blooms are on their way, and I can’t wait to bring these beautiful colors and patterns into my home with the season.

Floral patterns bursting with color are the easiest way to “throw” Spring right into your living room.

Terrazzo Styles We Love

Terrazzo – it’s everywhere!  But what is it?

It originally was a composite material, poured in place or precast, usually just for floors or counters.  It had pieces of marble, quartz, granite, glass, or just about any kind and size of chips added in the mix.  Now terrazzo is a look – and it is popping up on backslashes, rugs, tabletops, walls, lights, accessories…and everything in between!

Although commonly found on countertops and backsplashes, you can still create a beautiful, contemporary look like this one by Dzek.

Crushing on Velvet

No matter where we’re shopping, lately we’ve been seeing more and more luxurious crushed velvet.  Whether we’re browsing through our favorite clothing stores or picking out fabrics for our clients, velvet seems to be more popular than ever before.  And, to say we have a crush on the stuff would be an understatement!

There are so many different ways to incorporate this cozy texture into your home, and we’ve compiled a few of our favorite looks to share with you.  If you love the look, but are hesitant on adding it to your decor, let us help you find your favorite velvet style!

Loving the look, and ready to commit to a piece of velvet furniture?  It’s perfect for an intimate space, adding a cozy texture to a comfortable area.

Market Trends: Looks We Love!

A few weeks ago, we went down to High Point, North Carolina for the design market to see some of our favorite lines display their newest collections.  Usually, we leave with so many inspiring new ideas that it takes a few days to decompress and sort through all the wonderful pieces we saw.

This year, however, we just can’t stop thinking about all of the amazing colors on display at every showroom.  High Point was fully in bloom with some of the brightest, crispest, and most vibrant colors I’ve seen to date.  It seemed for a bit there that muted tones were really taking over, but now the biggest trend looking forward are these stunning, show-stopping hues… and we couldn’t be more excited about it!

We’ve put together a list of some of our favorite on-trend pieces, and we hope you enjoy them as much we do!

Back to the Table

Of all of the rooms in the house, none has seen such a drastic change in style over time as has the dining room.  The formal dining rooms that were only used on special occasions and holidays are virtually extinct in today’s lifestyle.  The den became the great room, and the kitchen became an open floor plan with many functions.  Kitchen tables were replaced by large islands.  Some of the changes were good, others not so much.

I never really understood the giant kitchen islands replacing the table.  As an Italian woman, there is nothing more important to me than family and food.  Somehow sitting all in a line facing the sink just seems so impersonal!  It’s not just about eating food, it’s about the entire dining experience.  Happily, the dining experience is back!  I’m getting more and more requests to redesign the eating area.  The very casual space is becoming a little more special.  We’re spending more time at home with friends, and the kitchen is now the “hub”, but we still want dining to be special.

Whether it be a table for 4, or one that can seat 12, an option exists for everyone.  Dining chairs can be matched, mismatched, upholstered, wood, metal or a combination of everything.  Here are some of our dining room inspirations to get you thinking about your dining space!

A bench seat and a table have so many possibilities!  Lots of room for diners, or a cozy place to curl up with a book!

Which Bed Is Right For You?

Do you watch tv in bed?  Or sit up and read?  Maybe you need an upholstered headboard.

Does your bed face a window with a beautiful view?  Maybe a headboard with a mirror.

Do you want your headboard to be a feature wall?  Try something unusual and artistic.

Are you short on space for nightstands?  Perhaps a headboard with attached small nightstands may fit in your space.

These are the first questions I ask my clients when I am designing a bedroom.  Your bed is one of the most important pieces of furniture in your home.  We spend 30% of our lives in bed.  After a good mattress, a solid bed to put it on is critical.  Once you’ve determined the function of your bed and headboard, then you determine the style – and there are so many to choose from.  Here are some of our favorites that just may inspire you to have the form that follows function and to get the perfect bed for a good night’s sleep!
