Wacky Woods

There was a time when a wood floor meant oak strips, and a wood wall meant planking headboard.  Now we are finding all species of woods in all different places.  Installation can be as easy as peel and stick!  Veneers come in every species imaginable.  Here are some creative uses of wood to get your imagination flowing!

We love these fun and funky wood creations!  What’s your favorite?  Would you try one in your home?

Flower Power

Maybe it’s because it’s summer and there are flowers everywhere,  I don’t know… but I’m seeing flowers in a whole new way right now.  We’ve written floral blogs before, but the flowers have never been as creative and realistic as the florals we’re currently seeing.

Take this gorgeous wall covering-  look at those flowers!  Yes, it’s bright, but a little goes a long way.  Take a little powder room to a whole new level.. .or bring back the accent wall in a fresh, new way!

Okay, we’ve all seen pillows shaped like flowers but this one is really a flower, petals and all!

Greige: The Hottest New Color?

Okay, I am obsessed!  Never one for the monochromatic, but I’m now a convert.  Grey can be too cold, and beige too blah….but put the two together and you get….GREIGE!!  Greige is the one of the hottest colors in interiors right now, and judging from the response I’ve seen, it may be here to stay.

Whether you opt for the monochromatic room, or want a few key pieces that will stand the test of time, griege may be your answer.  It works well with both cool and warm palates, so it’s versatile.

Kravet has come out with some beautiful lines.  One of my favorites is the Jeffrey Alan Marks collection;  It mixes beautiful soft blues and greiges and works beautifully in a coastal setting.

We feature Bella Cottage A LOT in our blogs.  As you know, my daughter Jillian loves this shabby chic style, and I think she would decorate her whole house with Bella Cottage if she could! Everything is always so soft and romantic…what’s not to love!?

We spend a third of our lives “under the sheets”, so don’t skimp.  Using a neutral color means your bedding will last with your changing color schemes!  And simple bedding in a neutral color can go with just about any decor.

We’ve definitely hopped on the bandwagon of softly painted finishes.  Why go “off-white”?  Try Greige instead.

Our new painted finish crush includes the chalk paint look, too.  I am determined to take an Annie Sloan class (maybe I can talk Jillian into joining me!) and do a blog of furniture before and after.  This greige paint is gorgeous!!

The Desk is Back and Better Than Ever!

Remember when every new kitchen had a built-in desk?  And every child’s room had one for homework?  Office desks were replaced with “computer tables” and “work stations”.  Once laptop computers became the common mode of communication, desks seemed to take more of a back seat.  I’ve always loved a great desk to work at, and now they’re back in all sizes, styles, and colors.  Here are some of our favorites-  Maybe it’s time to bring one back in your home!?

“Semi-Precious” Style Like You’ve Never Seen!

One trend that I have been seeing lots of is a very glamorous addition to rooms that totally steals the show wherever it’s displayed.  Semi-precious stones are no longer reserved for jewelry; They are being found in the design world in everything from lamps to headboards!

With the vibrance, depth, and complexity of the colors naturally found within many of these stones, they are sure to be show-stopping additions to any room.  We’ve pooled a few of our favorite semi-precious inspirations to show you how versatile these stones can be for your home when you think outside the box!

Purple has always been a color representing richness and luxury, so how perfect would it be to put amethyst on display in the bedroom or entryway to really make a statement?  I just love the way the light shows off the depth in its many colors!  Perfect for that glamorous condo in the city.

I cannot stress enough how much I love the way these stones are cut to show off their natural beauty and unique characteristics.  Not to mention, they surely create a bold look that guests will “Ooh” and “Aah” over every time!

Make Your Front Door Fabulous!

It’s true, first impressions really do matter.  So get instant curb appeal with a little paint, and make your front door be a welcoming entry into your home.  We spend so much time and effort on our “interiors” that sometimes we forget where it all starts – the minute you knock on the door!

Anyone that knows me, knows that I love turquoise and I love seahorses.  So, I’m all over this front door!  It’s whimsical and fun without being “cutesy”!

gallery-1430247734-hbx-turquoise-front-door-1108

And what’s the #1 door color in America?  Yes, it’s red!  But yellow and orange and green, and, well, just about anything else works if it’s done well and appropriate for the house and location!

Ceilings Are Your 5th Wall

If you’re a follower of our blog, you know that both my children are getting married soon.  My daughter, Jillian wants a beautiful vintage affair.  In our search for a venue we found a location with an enchanting ballroom.  The room is unique, in part, because of its amazing fifth wall: the ceiling.

So often, when I work with a client and suggest a different ceiling treatment, they look surprised.  Shouldn’t ceilings be white??  Here’s proof that ceilings can be dark, light, tin, beamed, coffered, glazed, and treated with as much variation as your imagination allows!

Get some inspiration; Take a walk around your house, and see how you can transform your fifth wall!!  Then, show us what you did!!!

Color Feature: Onyx

Holiday parties, winter outfits – seems black, or “onyx”, is the “go to” color at this time of year.  Whether it be in clothing or decor, black is a statement color.  I often use it where I need a pop of color just as I would a bright hue.  Here are some basic black – whether it be as an exterior…

Black is a neutral.  It works with almost every color and hue.  It can be dramatic, or it can be soothing.  Next time you can’t make up your mind, or are looking for something just a little different, look no further than basic black!
