A Tale of 2 Weddings: Classic Cape Cod and Vintage Romance

Summer 2015 was the summer of weddings at the Hayward house.  Justin and Lydia were married in June, and Jillian and Christian in September.  In one summer, my family doubled!  How lucky I am to have 2 new “children”!

As different as Justin and Jillian are, so were their weddings.  Justin and Lydia met when they were 15 years old in Chatham.  Lydia’s family also has a summer home there, so they have so many memories of summers together on the beaches of Cape Cod.  Their wedding was a perfect June day and their celebration was quintessential Cape Cod.  From the bridesmaids’ vibrant blue Lilly Pulitzer dresses, to the hydrangea bouquets, to the barnboard and nautical rope accents, their wedding was Classic Cape Cod!

Jillian and Christian met in college at rival schools (Jill at BU, Christian at BC) and wanted something a little closer to Boston.  Jillian loves the vintage, shabby chic look, and Christian is an old soul that would have been right at home decades ago.  Their wedding reflected their love of all things vintage with their venue at Alden Castle, along with its dark wood panels and crystal chandeliers, blush colored garden roses and hand painted signage, reclaimed wood boards and groomsmen in black tuxedos and bow ties, their wedding was Vintage Romance.

Lydia and Jillian each had a very special “something old”.  Lydia wore her great, great grandmothers vintage lace fingertip veil, also worn by her mom and her aunt.  Simply beautiful and timeless!

The lace around Jillian’s bouquet was actually the lace cuffs from my wedding gown.  Jillian also cut down my wedding gown to cocktail length and wore it for her Rehearsal Dinner!  How honored I was that she chose to make these touches her “something old”.

Romantic Bridal Bouquets

Here I am once again taking over for Susan in our wedding series to share with you some of my favorite floral inspirations!  No matter what type of wedding you have, flowers are sure to be a vital part of your decor, tablescapes, and of course, outfits!

Your bouquet should set the tone for the style and theme of your wedding.  My style is romantic, soft, and vintage, and so will be my bridal bouquet.  I’m not a fan of the “perfectly round” bouquets, but rather something with a little bit more texture and greens.  I wish I could choose ALL of these bouquets for my own wedding!

The Perfect Rehearsal Dinner

For this third post in our wedding series, I (Jillian) have once again taken over for my mom to share my wedding inspiration with you.  Although the rehearsal dinner for myself and Christian has been generously taken over by his parents, I’ve been hearing lots of ideas that my parents have in store for my brother’s in June!

Before you start coming up with fun ideas for décor, you’ll want to make sure you pick the right venue.  Whether you choose to have it on your backyard patio, a clambake on the beach, or at a restaurant, you’ll want to make sure that you find a space with privacy.  I say that because the last thing you’ll want is have your entire party in the middle of a restaurant where everyone else in the room with you is listening to every toast, joke, and story being told (you know there are sure to be some embarrassing ones if your family is anything like mine!).

Once you’ve found the perfect spot, you’ll need some decorating inspiration- that’s where I come in!  Here are some gorgeous rehearsal dinners and tablescapes that I think are just absolutely stunning.  Hopefully I’ll be able to provide you some inspiration for your event, or even some ideas for your next dinner party!  Enjoy!

Our Most Unique Bachelorette Party Ideas

We’ve all seen the wild and crazy bachelorette parties (if not been a part of one), but do they ALL have to be like that?

Denise Truscello, WireImage (USA Today)

Denise Truscello, WireImage (USA Today)

Of course not!!!  While a night out on the town may be fun for some brides, there are certainly others who might prefer a different activity to kick off their wedding with their closest girlfriends.  We’ve compiled some of our favorite “out-of-the-box” bachelorette party ideas for those ladies who might want something a little less traditional!

“Build a Book”

What a GREAT idea from Cosmo:  Buy a scrapbook with removable pages, and mail a page to each bridesmaid to decorate and fill with pictures.  If the bridesmaids were all local, this could be a fun get-together idea to get to know each other and bond over a bottle of wine and some crafts!  Any bride would be so touched to receive such a thoughtful gift from her best friends during her bachelorette party.

Scavenger Hunt

Who says bachelorette parties have to be at the hottest night club?  Planning a scavenger hunt could be just as fun to plan as it will be to play!  Get creative and come up with some awesome prizes!

Sweat it Out!

For a sporty bride, taking a dance class together may be better than a crazy night at the bar.  Bonding over a new experience like going rock climbing or taking a salsa class might be just the thing to tap into your bride’s athletic interests.  Not to mention, a dance class might be perfect for everyone to learn some new moves before the wedding!  You could even try a class with a fun theme, like Burlesque or Dirty Dancing!

Slumber Party… The “Grown Up” Way

Let’s face it, having an old school slumber party is pretty “been there, done that”.  That being said, I think every girl could argue that good drinks, good food, and good friends are all you need for the perfect party.  So, why not try a new “grown up” spin on the classic sleepover, and throw a weekend getaway at a local ski lodge or beach house?  Complete with sweet treats, yummy cocktails, and an old fashioned movie night!

Top 5 Bridal Shower Themes to Fit Any Bride’s Style!

After receiving so many positive responses to our wedding blogs, and in celebration of the upcoming wedding season, I’ve enlisted the help of my daughter, Jillian, to write the next series of blogs dedicated to “everything weddings”.  As a bride-to-be, she can share some of her experiences and ideas on all aspects of planning the perfect wedding and it’s many fun events.  So… take it away Jillian!  First up: our favorite bridal shower themes!

1470351_10151737054331176_1808768012_n

1. For the Laid-Back Bride: Poolside Brunch

The two greatest words to a laid-back gal: “pool” and “brunch”.  So, why not put these fantastic events together to create a fun and relaxed event where everyone will feel at ease!?  One of my biggest fears as a bride-to-be is all of the pressure that comes with being the center of attention on this day, and having a giant pool party seems like such a great idea to keep everyone amused!

2. For the “Girly-Girl”: Vintage Tea Party

My wedding will have a definite vintage feel, so I really love this idea incorporated into a tea party bridal shower.  Although it may be a bit too girly for me, a vintage style tea party could be the perfect ticket for that bride who loves to bring out her feminine side.  Complete with macaroons and dainty cupcakes, this shower would be a simply gorgeous affair!

3. For the Southern Belle: A Day At The Races

Here’s another theme that wouldn’t exactly be my number choice, but come on, who wouldn’t love a chance to wear a giant floppy hat with your best friends?!  I have to admit, it would be totally worth it to see some of my family get into character 🙂

4.  For the Earthy Bride: Shabby Chic

Where the vintage tea party took a turn towards the ultimate “girly”, a shabby chic shower would have that same vintage root, but embellish more with florals and a rustic vibe.  I love the idea of using lots of fresh flowers and greens, and you could even take it one step further and make the menu an all-natural feast!

5.  For the Beach Bum: “Just Maui-ed”

Talk about a honeymoon BEFORE the honeymoon!!  This shower is like a vacation in itself- palm trees, lais, and hula skirts?  Sign me up!  This is an event that not only the bride would love, but I think the guests would enjoy the mini vacation, too.  Maybe some drinks served in coconuts to go with those cupcakes?

Top 10 Wedding Registry Must-Haves

With the weddings of my 2 children, Justin and Jillian, this year I’ve been spending a lot of time looking at bridal registries.  For the newly engaged, a registry is a giant wish list of all the things they would love to have to create their special home.  I’ve often thought about what I’d put on my registry if I were to do it again in 2015!  Here are my Top 10 Wedding Registry necessities!

1.  Casual Dinnerware: In white

Let’s face it, there’s a reason restaurants use white dishes – it makes the food stand out so much better.  If you don’t want something plain, try a design like this one from Sur La Table!

Vintage Lace Collection, Sur La Table

2.  Fine China

It’s no secret that I’m a pushover for anything blue…but this set is both simple and elegant!

3.  Non-stick Cookware: Ones that will really last!

Forget the discount stores on this one and get some that will last.  My favorite go-to skillet is my HUGE Calphalon non-stick with a glass cover.  The bigger the better, especially for an Italian mother that likes to cook!

4.  Bakeware: Le Creuset

I make a shredded beef that has to cook for hours.  I put it in my Le Creuset and don’t have to touch it until it’s done.  Yes, they are a little pricey, but worth every penny.

5.  Table Linens: For everyday, and special occasions

I have drawers of beautiful table linens in my buffet.  The only problem is I don’t use them!  The thought of having to starch and press them after each use really limits how often they come out of the drawer.  If I were to do it again, I’d pick an elegant placemat or runner that simply needs to wiped down at the end of the night!

6.  Towels: The fluffiest ones you can find!

This is a wish list, my friends, so put the softest, fluffiest towels you can find.  They will last you for years!!

7.  Bedding: Don’t skimp on the thread count!

This is another one of those things that you should go for quality.  There’s nothing better than slipping into beautiful, fine Egyptian cotton sheets.  Shopping for bedding requires you to use your sense of touch first!

Serena & Lily

8.  Tea Set:  You can never go wrong with vintage!

Who doesn’t love being served tea in a real teacup?  Yes, mugs are great, but tea seems just a little tastier and teatime that much more special when drunk from a vintage teacup.  Try consignment stores for this one!  They are loaded with a treasure trove of vintage pieces!

9.  Stand-Up Mixer- KitchenAid

KitchenAid

One of the most important items in my kitchen is my mixer.  Whether or not the bride-to-be (or groom-to-be!) is a chef now, chances are they will be!

10.  Food Processor- Cuisinart

Here’s an appliance that will just make life a little easier!  Shred a bag of carrots for that carrot cake by hand or just push a button and have them done in minutes!

Welcome, 2015! “I do”!!

What a year 2015 will be for the Hayward house!  We will be adding 2 new members to our family – our son, Justin, will be marrying Lydia, his childhood sweetheart, in a summer wedding on Cape Cod.  And good things come in two’s – our daughter, Jillian, will be heading home from San Diego, with her fiancé, Christian,  for a fall wedding in the Boston area.

As different as my children are, so will be their weddings!  Justin and Lydia will be having a traditional, beachy, Cape Cod affair, hoping for a beautiful day to take advantage of our Chatham ocean views.  Jillian and Christian, on the other hand, will be looking forward to a “vintage, rustic” wedding in a beautifully restored “castle”.

I don’t want to give away any secrets from the future brides and grooms to be, so instead I thought I would put together some ideas of beach and vintage themed weddings!

For the beach inspired wedding, here are some ideas.  Simple tablescapes using natural elements and soft colors are always winners for a summer wedding.
